The protection of privacy rights plays a crucial role in today’s digital society. Privacy legislation also continues to develop. For example, the Digital Markets Act<\/em> (DMA) enters into force from March 2024*. The DMA designates the major player Google as a gatekeeper, meaning that Google is responsible for obtaining user consent for the collection of personal data.<\/p>\n

With the new DMA, Google Consent Mode V2 (hereinafter ‘Consent Mode’) is being introduced. As a website owner, you can inform Google about the various purposes for which users have given consent to collect data.<\/p>\n

What is Consent Mode?<\/strong><\/h5>\n

Consent Mode is a Google product that helps website owners comply with privacy legislation, such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). With Consent Mode, you manage Google services, such as Google Ads and Analytics, based on users’ cookie consent. In order to keep using Google services, it is mandatory to upgrade to Consent Mode V2. Consent Mode is therefore an update to the consent mode: the way in which websites must ask visitors for consent for cookies and other trackers.<\/p>\n

In November 2023, Google introduced two versions of Consent Mode: Basic and Advanced. The Basic version does not track any data until the website visitor gives consent for this by accepting cookies.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, the Advanced version already collects data before the website visitor makes a choice. But this is done in a privacy-friendly way. The Advanced version specifically asks whether cookies may be used for personalized advertisements and analytics. In the Advanced version, no personal information is kept about who made a purchase on the website. However, it is recorded that, for example, a purchase took place. That is again useful for conversion measurement for the webshop in question!<\/p>\n

Not upgrading to Consent Mode can lead to:<\/u><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. violation of privacy legislation;<\/li>\n
  2. reduction in the accuracy and completeness of conversion data, causing insights into user behavior to be lost;<\/li>\n
  3. difficulties with remarketing** without explicit user consent;<\/li>\n
  4. discontinuation of conversion tracking from Google advertising tools and the loss of the ability to reach new users from the EEA.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Through the consent of website visitors, businesses can comply with the requirements of privacy legislation while maintaining effective marketing strategies. Conversions are measured, data is retained, even if cookies are not permitted. This is beneficial for you as a website owner and contributes to the trust of your visitors.<\/p>\n

    Before the introduction of Consent Mode V2, there were two parameters: analytics_storage and ad_storage, both related to data protection.<\/p>\n

    What is new about Consent Mode?<\/strong><\/h5>\n

    With Consent Mode V2, there are now two new parameters: ad_user_data and ad_personalization.<\/p>\n

      \n
    1. Ad_user_data<\/em>: controls whether data may be sent to Google for advertising purposes;<\/li>\n
    2. Ad_personalization<\/em>: controls whether a visitor can be reached again through remarketing with personalized advertisements.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      The conclusion is that Consent Mode is essential to bring your website in line with European legislation such as the GDPR and the DMA. Consent Mode also contributes to the trust of website visitors. In addition, Consent Mode helps to better map conversions, even if users do not give (full) consent for cookies. Not upgrading to Consent Mode before 1 March 2024 can result in reduced insight into advertising performance and thus the usefulness of Google ad campaigns. It also becomes more difficult to build separate target groups within the EEA.<\/p>\n
